SummitShare's visit to CC Art Gallery in Lusaka provided valuable insights into art curation and gallery operations.
In Q4 of 2023, the core team was privileged to receive an open invitation to CC Art Gallery in Lusaka, Zambia.
The CC Art Gallery is managed by an artists collective, showcasing a diverse array of pieces that originate from various artists within the group. The collection includes abstract yet subtly expressive works from Augustine Kagimu, alongside richly colored, expressive paintings by Raphael Chilufya. What stands out about this collection is the way it places well-known artists' works right next to those of up-and-coming artists, highlighting the collective's unity and commitment to equality among its members. This unique blend of established and emerging talent reflects the inclusive spirit and collaborative ethos of the gallery.
During our visit, the team was allowed to tour the gallery independently. This gave us the chance to observe the aesthetic, artwork placement, and information display within an exhibit. This freedom allowed us to form our own opinions and thoughts without external guidance, immersing ourselves fully in the experience. The layout and presentation of the artworks provided valuable insights into effective curation and the seamless integration of diverse artistic styles.
Later, curators joined us to discuss our findings, points of interest, and how they handle information related to their pieces. The discussions were enlightening, offering us a deeper understanding of the operational aspects of running a gallery. We explored topics such as the challenges they face with payment methods for artwork, the distribution of revenue post-sales, and the critical importance of provenance for artists. The curators shared their experiences and strategies, giving us practical knowledge that we could potentially apply to our own projects.
The visit also provided an opportunity to understand the logistical and financial intricacies of maintaining a gallery. We learned about the efforts required to ensure that each piece is accurately cataloged, authenticated, and presented to the public. This behind-the-scenes look into the gallery's operations underscored the importance of meticulous planning and execution in the art world.
Overall, the experiences from this visit were invaluable, providing professional context to a field we aim to engage with deeply. The insights gained will be instrumental as we continue to develop and refine our project. We are ever thankful for the opportunity to learn from the professionals at CC Art Gallery and to build relationships that will support our growth and improvement. These interactions not only contribute to the enhancement of our project but also foster personal and professional development within our team.
The visit to CC Art Gallery has significantly enriched our understanding and approach, and we look forward to applying these learnings to create a more impactful and informed project. The opportunity to engage with such a dedicated and knowledgeable community has been a highlight of our journey, and we are excited about the future collaborations and innovations that will arise from this experience.
